AMERICAN DAD (FOX, New!) - "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane and writers Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman have been given the go ahead to produce a pilot presentation for a new animated series for the network. The series, which will be produced by 20th Century Fox Television, focuses on a family consisting of Stan, a right-leaning C.I.A. agent; his wife; their two kids, including a liberal daughter; a housebound alien named Roger; and a French-speaking goldfish. Like "Family Guy," MacFarlane plans to provide several of the character voices. The creators liken the show to a 21st century version of "All in the Family" and will not shy away from political and social humor. The news marks FOX's second major animated push for fall 2004, the other being a small screen adaptation of the comic strip "The Boondocks."

ABOUT US/HELPARCHIVESBUSINESSCLASSIFIEDSCOMMUNITIESDISCUSSIONENTERTAINMENT-Books-Comics-Movie Times-TV Listings -USA WeekendLIFESTYLESMARKETPLACENEWSOPINIONPROMOTIONSSPORTSDENVER WEATHERDPO MAINjoanne ostrowWayans updates Cosby By Joanne OstrowDenver Post TV/Radio Critic Mar. 29, 2001 - When he ruled television in the 1980s, Bill Cosby was blasted for not being realistic enough in terms of depicting mainstream black culture. In the harshest, most unfair terms, he was accused of not being "black enough." His Cliff Huxtable, an obstetrician married to a lawyer, rarely dealt in matters of race relations. The family lived in affluence, shielded from the underclass and hardscrabble existence. Some praised the series as happily color-blind; others called it woefully out of touch. Sure, affluent African-American professionals were well represented, but "The Cosby Show" left out more of the black population than it included. A new sitcom, the 2001 update of "The Cosby Show," gives a nod to Cosby as mentor while doing more to highlight grittier urban African-American culture. "My Wife and Kids," starring, co-created and co-produced by Damon Wayans, is more focused on black culture than the Huxtables ever were. At the same time, it keeps street culture safely at a distance from the impeccable suburban kitchen. Wayans, a captivating comic player in films ( "Bamboozled'') and ensemble TV work ( "In Living Color''), has the makings of a hit in his new domestic comedy about the "mean streets of Stamford, Conn." "My Wife and Kids," debuts tonight at 7 on Channel 7. As Michael Kyle, Wayans is the perpetually confused dad whose kids are becoming unknowable just as his high-school sweetheart wife is becoming consumed by her blossoming career as a stockbroker. Even the housekeeper has little use for him. A successful breadwinner for years, Michael is surprised to find he's most helpful now when he's around to "nuke some chicken." Wayans is irresistible when he breaks into physical shtick: doing impressions of rap artists, making jokes at the expense of Michael Jackson (and his surgeries) and tackling "that whole hip-hop mentality." He makes middle-age seem ancient when he portrays the aging father figure, reminiscing about his day, when music was music and concerts were concerts, before a show meant a guy in baggy pants pulling at his crotch. In the pilot episode, his teenage son (George O. Gore II) wants $30 to see a concert by a group called "MC Murder Death," who apparently sings a ditty called "Bullet to the Brain." Dad isn't buying, and Mom (Tisha Campbell-Martin) lets Jr. know "that gangsta stuff is disrespectful to women." The boy is dispatched from the room with Dad instructing him to "pull up your pants and decide which one them hats you gonna wear" - gently knocking the hiphop mode but letting him know he's clued in. The tone is sitcomhip, stopping short of real arguments or vulgarity. In a way, Wayans has more specifically black cultural phenomena to work with than Cosby did. The current infusion of hip-hop music, language and fashion into mainstream American culture is hard to miss. Meanwhile, teen sex, drugs and offensive musical lyrics are increasingly front and center - serious issues that were a bit out of reach in the Cosby era but that now serve as fertile grounds for comic material. Wayans manages to strike a mindful, responsible parental attitude while pouting about being eclipsed as the master of the house. "My Wife and Kids" cleverly straddles the line between conventional domestic comedy and subversive countercultural humor. Picture "Father Knows Best" meets "Homey the Clown." Michael Kyle may be befuddled, but ultimately he's on the side of self-respect, a squeaky clean role model updating Cosby's Cliff Huxtable for the new century. 2ff7e9595c
