The Rolex serial numbers are found between the lugs on the side of the case at the 6 o'clock side, behind the bracelet. This 4-8 digit number is engraved by Rolex on every watch and it can be used to determine its production date. Beginning in 2005, the Company started to also engrave the serial number on the inside flange (or "rehaut" as it's called in French) between the dial and the crystal. Starting in 2008, the Company began to only engrave the numbers on the rehaut. The serial numbers can be found in one of two places on the watch. First check the inner rim of the watch face (also called the rehaut, which is french for "flange") between the dial and the crystal. If the watch was produced in 2005 or newer the serial should be engraved on the rehaut.

The serial and case reference numbers, located between the lugs are engraved with great detail and are sharp. On a fake Rolex, these numbers often look like they have been sand-blasted or roughly etched into the case. As you can see in the example below, the engraving between the lugs of a genuine Rolex features very fine lines, which catch the light in a manner similar to a diamond-cut edge. However, many counterfeits will feature a sandy acid-etched appearance, as seen in the example below. Furthermore, the spacing on these numbers is often too close together. It is worth mentioning that counterfeiters frequently use the SAME numbers on their watches.
Every Rolex watch has a unique serial number. Depending on the year the watch was manufactured, you should be able to find the serial number engraved at one of two locations: either between the lugs or inside the bezel under the crystal, at 6:00 in both instances. The model number should also be engraved between the lugs on the 12:00 side. The numbers should be engraved sharply and precisely, and should not appear to have been engraved by hand.
Hi, got a 2008 pre-owned Deep Sea 116660 as a collection to my DSSD-JC 126660. The serial number is V000XXX with a clasp PJ3 .From my understanding, PJ 3 means March 2008 and when the first DSSD was released in 2008, it was a mixture of M & V serial numbers. There are many forums claiming V was released end of 2008, whereas my clasp show March 2008.I would like to find out when did the V serial DSSD started as I have found a few 2008 DSSD with M serial like (922XXX) with PJ4 clasp (April 2008), a month later than my V serial release .(RSC complete overhaul a month ago, 100% verified)

You should be able to hold it to the light and see a slight glow around the edges. A fake will have worn down or sloppy engraving, as the process counterfeiters use is not exact enough to replicate the clean Rolex serial number.
